this line of enquiry began with jackson pollock, as i studied the process of making his ‘drip’ paintings.
it was interesting to me that work which looked like a series of arbitrary decisions by a painter were publicly perceived as chaotic, fresh, and emotionally intense. as i observed more abstract-expressionist-painters — and reflected on my own painting practice — the desire to algorithmise physical painting emerged, and i wondered whether work produced by pseudo-randomness could be perceived as emotionally affective.
I have no fears about making changes, destroying the image, etc., because the painting has a life of its own. I try to let it come through.
