had a great conversation with kari love.

  • she disagreed with itp theses traps, and told me cases where many might be more in service of the project than one. resonated with my initial disagreement too.

  • connections between braille as a tactile interface & haptics (distance between things makes it open for perception).

  • she also spoke about how cellular automata is prevalent even in human biology; like so:

  • she asked me to look at what the core of my thesis is: is it perception or materiality? either is okay, but i need to know. she mentioned how luisa pereira told her once to keep asking why-s (which was amusing to me because i tell students the same, but failed to follow my own advice). why cellular automata -> why that -> why that. if i'm using water, what about that material excites me? why water?

  • mentioned that it might be worthwhile to speak with tom-igoe & daniel shiffman, because of their interests in ‘making computation physical’ and ‘nature & computation’.

  • we spoke about her work often stems from the curiosity of a material: what can a material be that it hasn't been yet?

  • we also spoke about making people be cells and acting out cellular automata rules — what would that look like? want to speak with bairui & do it as a performance piece.

  • find something interesting, and the thesis is a chance to go deeper into the thing.

speaking to her also made me realize how clear she is as an artist, and how developed her choices are. she’s — as prachi would have called it — ‘mulled’ over things (and wandered) greatly.
