karthik gave a talk about his work at new-york times with technology-based news-storytelling in applications_class-2. his talk was inspiring.
notes:
- says the goal for this team is to make complex information easier to consume. however, when probed, he did not answer how they test so 1 .
- they used simulations, ar-visualisations, and other things to tie the graphics and the story together. as people scroll, simulations / experiences run so that people can ‘investigate’ for themselves (such as walking around a crash site).
- some projects:
phenomenal guy though.
he made me re-believe in rigour (the lack of rigour in creatives), and i understood how insane their r & d process was. it made me feel like i was doing less, and i again felt a shock of there’s too little time.
mimi yin, however, in icm_class-2 told me that the overwhelm is my design. i have a lot to learn, and not jump forward in time.
just keep making (and reflecting on what you made).
Footnotes
-
he said they do a lot of internal tests, and that the internal feedback (plus reader comments) are positive. i wonder whether that’s a good method to gauge success, and whether this sort of work is, in-fact, helping readers. ↩
