tom-igoe showed in the previous class that we can start listening on a port with nc -l <port>.

this week we had to dig for organizations we want to research on. emilia had reached out to me, so i did some digging and found these to be interesting:

  • proposing irtf (internet research task force): which looks at advancing the internet. i want to know what is being studied right now.
  • internet engineering task force (ietf). irtf is — i think — a sister organization to irtf.
  • rfc editor.
  • international telecommunication union (itu).

reading responses:

read all the various readings around energy & power consumption of a.i. & computers.

my general dissatisfaction with the growing energy consumption is that i can do very little to prevent it. it feels like capitalism — people are vehemently against it, but we all unavoidably live in it.

for the people that face their impact, i’m sure their opinions are more intense. this is like politics — i was indifferent, until political outcomes (by the party in power) began to affect me.

then the other bit is my influence: it’s so little. say i move onto lower-computing resources — at great productive costs — my impact is very little (because people around me become more frivolous as time passes). like a.i. for example: people now ask an a.i. agent every tiny question — avoiding a simple google search that consumes far less energy. opening up a dictionary: that consumes even lesser energy. people don’t decide to do that.

i think we’re all a part of the collective destruction we consent to ensue. this wave is a sum total of what we prioritize as human-beings; it is nature executing itself in the purest way it could — a certain subset of beings is taking a planet to an inevitable doom.

the readings actually made me feel very grim. i felt like i was simply complaining or ranting, and that we could collectively do so in class too, and none of that would matter.
