Apart from founding the company and having a planet-sized ego, the turning point for a lot of people was the publication of A New Kind of Science, which seems to argue that we should give up on creating mathematical models and instead search for game-of-life-like automata that seems to model the systems we are interested in. And also strongly implies that he personally invented most of this.
The book was poorly received, to put it mildly.
