ask:
Find and post to the Miro board an example of synthetic media (in marketing, art, entertainment, etc.) Find novel / unique examples if possible. Write a blog post (For next week) showcasing the example you found and answer the following questions:
Why do you consider this synthetic media?
What can you find about how this was made? If it’s machine learning based can you find information about the data set used to train it?
Who created this work? Why do you imagine they used synthetic media tools instead of more ‘traditional’ methods of media making?
response:
synthetic media piece is this:

by janelle shane.
the author runs (or ran) a blog called “ai weirdness”. the approach is similar to another artist (https://computationalmama.xyz/) — break the ai (or push the model) to understand where its boundaries are.
the title of the book is from an experiment where she taught a bot how to flirt with human-beings, by training it on human-written pick-up lines (online (such as on reddit)). it produced:
you are a thing and i love you.
janelle says, in her book:
the ai’s virtual brain (about the same complexity as a worm’s) wasn’t capable of picking up the subtleties of the dataset, including misogyny or cheesiness.
the entire book is filled with weird experiments like these, where she pushes the boundaries and messes around with this thing that is ‘taking over the world’ to understand how it really works. great book, along with my other standard recommendation for this sort of stuff: artificial intelligence: a guide for thinking humans, by melanie mitchell.
